What the Evidence Supports for Collagen Powder

Dissolved in coffee, collagen peptides are very popular. The research is mixed, small and often funded by makers.

What collagen peptides are

Collagen is a structural protein in skin, tendon and bone. Supplements are made by breaking it into short fragments (hydrolysis) so it dissolves easily. These are the "collagen peptides" on the label.

What happens when you eat them

Digestion splits many into amino acids and a portion survives as di- and tripeptides that can be absorbed. Whether those fragments signal skin or joint cells, rather than serve as plain building material, is still debated.

What trials show

  • Several small trials report modest improvements in skin hydration or elasticity, and a 2021 pooled analysis of 19 trials leaned positive.
  • Many are short, use self-reported outcomes, and are funded by product makers.
  • A 2025 meta-analysis of 23 trials sorted them by funder and quality: the independent trials and the high-quality trials showed no skin benefit.

A fair reading

Collagen supplements are probably safe for most people and may help a little in some contexts. They are protein with a good marketing story. If your diet already covers protein, the extra effect is likely small.

Better value questions

  1. Does the study use the same dose and product as the one on the shelf?
  2. Is the outcome measured objectively?
  3. Who paid?
